U.S. Army Maj. William Todd Viar, son of Judy Haines of Hagerstown and the late Bill Viar, went to Iraq on April 29 as an operations officer with the Task Force Defense-Threat Reduction Agency.

Viar, who is stationed at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, is a 1988 graduate of Williamsport High School and a 1992 graduate of Virginia Military Institute with a degree in physics. He has a graduate degree in nuclear engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.

Haines said her son volunteered to go to Iraq to aid in the investigation of its nuclear weapons program, and is due home in August.
