Trash collection costs have increased

SHARPSBURG - The town's trash collection costs have gone up, Mayor Hal Spielman said at Monday night's Sharpsburg Town Council meeting.

Waste Management had been charging the town $1,900 per month, Spielman said.

A company official asked Spielman how many houses are in town and Spielman told him 273. Spielman said that was more than the company had thought, and the bill went up to $3,500 a month.

After Spielman discussed the bill with the company, he said, the monthly charge was lowered to $2,700 a month. The company is not necessarily picking up trash at all 273 houses because some are businesses.

Council members discussed whether something could be done to help Waste Management determine which houses are businesses, so their trash would not be picked up.

After the meeting, Spielman said the town did pay the $3,500 rate for one month. He did not know if the town would be reimbursed for the difference in rates.

The town's contract with Waste Management ends Nov. 1, 2005, he said.
