June 09, 2004|by BRIAN SHAPPELL

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - A Berkeley County, W.Va., boy was killed Tuesday afternoon when the dirt bike he was riding collided with a car near Hedgesville, authorities said.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Department Cpl. Steve Vigh said a 14-year-old, whose name and address were not released, died as a result of a 4 p.m. accident on Butts Mill Road, near Providence Church Road. Vigh said the boy's dirt bike, which was traveling west, and an eastbound car, which he did not describe, collided head-on.

The driver of the car was described as a Berkeley County resident, between 16 and 20 years old, Vigh said.

Butts Mill Road was closed for nearly an hour during the investigation and cleanup following the wreck.

Deputies did not release information on the condition of the car's driver Monday night.

Berkeley County Medical Examiner David Brining said the boy suffered multiple blunt trauma injuries when he was thrown from the dirt bike. Brining said the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
