Area man charged in marijuana ring

A federal grand jury indictment unsealed in Detroit Monday charges 16 people - including a Frederick, Md., man - with various narcotics and money laundering offenses in connection with a hydroponics marijuana ring that extended to Frederick and Montgomery counties in Maryland.

According to a written release from the United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan, a year-long investigation into a Toronto-based Asian controlled organized crime syndicate culminated in the indictment, which alleges that the group smuggled by passenger car and commercial truck to cells in Detroit; Boston; Pittsburgh, Hagerstown; Camden, N.J.; Columbus, Ohio; Tennessee; Mississippi and California.

As a result of the investigation, $5 million in drug money, 1,700 pounds of marijuana and 3,000 tablets of Ecstasy were seized, the release says.

Drug Enforcement Administration Hagerstown Resident Agent in Charge Peter Mitesser said Tuesday that there is no evidence that any of the high potency drugs allegedly sold by the ring were distributed in Hagerstown.

He said that the year-long investigation was performed jointly by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Locally, he said, the Maryland State Police and the Frederick County Narcotics Task Force helped in the investigation.

He said Sean Cao, 35, of 4924 Sutherland Drive in Frederick, was charged in the indictment with conspiracy to distribute marijuana. Mitesser said four semi-automatic pistols and $44,000 in U.S. currency were found at his Frederick home.

Man charged with petit larceny, fleeing

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after he allegedly loaded an air conditioner into a Kmart shopping cart and had his young daughter push the cart toward the parking lot without paying, court records allege.

Charles William Fraley, 27, of 168 Caplinger Drive, also was charged with petit larceny and fleeing on foot, a charge that stemmed from an unrelated incident.

The incident at Kmart happened on May 17 and was investigated by Deputy T.S. Shetley of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department. Store personnel stopped Fraley before he put the air conditioner into his car, but Fraley then left before police arrived, records state.

The girl looked to be about 6 years old, police said.

The fleeing on foot charge was filed after Fraley allegedly ran from police on May 1 despite repeated commands that he stop, records indicate.
