COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Irv Sleighter pitched a complete-game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and went 2-for-4 with three RBI as Chambersburg beat defending PIAA Class AAA state champ West Chester East 9-2 in the first round of the state playoffs Monday at Ursinus College.

"Sleighter (10-0) pitched well again," Chambersburg coach Bob Thomas said. "He didn't have as good a fastball as he usually has, but he pitched a good game. You can't complain."

The Trojans (22-4) went up 2-0 with single runs in the top of the first and third innings, before breaking the game open with a four-run sixth for a 6-0 lead.

"Finally in the sixth we started finding some holes," Thomas said.

Cody Stinger hit a two-run homer and Sleighter hit an RBI double for Chambersburg in the sixth.

West Chester East (22-3) answered in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer by Eric Chamness, before the Trojans added three more in the seventh.


Jared Olson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and four runs scored for Chambersburg.

The Trojans will face Whitehall, a 5-3 winner over Neshaminy, in the quarterfinals Thursday. Site and time for the game still are to be determined.

"We have graduation Thursday, so it will be sometime early in the day," Thomas said.


Chambersburg 6, Hazleton 2

WILKES BARRE, Pa. - Chambersburg beat Hazleton in 13 innings in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA state tournament. No other information was reported.

The Trojans (23-3) will face Pennsbury, a 3-0 winner over Dallastown, in the quarterfinals Thursday, site and time to be announced.

Mifflinburg 2, James Buchanan 0

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Andy Swanger homered to lift Mifflinburg (23-1) over James Buchanan (17-7) in the first round of the PIAA Class AA state tournament. No other information was reported.


Brunswick 6, Jefferson 0

JEFFERSON, Md. - Jon Sechler threw a three-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts for Brunswick (10-1), while Cory O'Bryan had three hits, including a solo home run, Steve Goode hit a two-run homer and Jimmy Jackson had two hits, including a double.


Funkstown 7, Charles Town 5: Kyle Robinson had two hits and an RBI while Orland Dean had two hits for Funkstown (10-1, 1-0).


National Little League

Funkstown 7, AMVETS 4: Ben Stone, Brandon Burnett and Jayme Sutherland each two hits for Funkstown. Blake Bandeff had two hits for AMVETS.

Clear Spring Little League

Clear Spring Pharmacy 18, Accent Imaging 10: Brian Lesher and Brian Bussard each had three hits for Clear Spring Pharmacy. Garrett Higgins had two hits for Accent Imaging.

Hagerstown PONY League

Jeter 12, Goodwill 9: Tommy Evans and Tyler Hornbecker each had two hits, including a two-run homer apiece, for Jeter, while Kevin Kocsis and Andrew Stout each homered and Brian Leferte added two hits. Cody Snavely had two hits and Cam Allen hit a three-run homer for Goodwill.

Firefighters 6, FOP 1: Danny Reed and J.J. O'Neill combined to pitch a two-hitter for Firefighters, while Brendan Palmer and Patrick Phillips each had two hits.

Jeter 12, Firefighters 10: Kevin Kocsis had a home run and struck out 13 for Jeter, while Tommy Evans and Andrew Stout each homered and Tyler Hornbecker and Brian Laferte each had two hits. Chipper Mallott had three hits and J.J. O'Neil had two hits for Firefighters.

South Mountain Little League

Thompson's Gas 5, Post 10 3: Tyler Itnyre had nine strikeouts and Brandon McLean had two hits, including a home run, to lead Thompson's Gas. Kyle Gotzinger added two hits. Cody Delaney had two hits, including a two-run home run, for Post 10.

National Minor League

Funkstown Legion 18, Long Meadow Exxon 9: Ryan Abbott, R.J. Winston and Jeffrey Bennett combined on a three-hitter. Bryce Nigh and Arthur Nicholl had two hits each for Funkstown. Steven Keith had two hits for Long Meadow Exxon.

American Little League

Goodwill 10, FOP 4: Ahmere Ware, Timothy Butler and Scott St. Clair each had two hits for Goodwill, while William Black had two hits, including a home run, and struck out 13. For FOP, Gerald Tonsil and Tyrel McCoy each had two hits.

Smithsburg Babe Ruth Middle School Division

Meadow's Insurance 13, Thurmont 3: Steven Younker had three hits, including a home run, for Meadow's Insurance, while Josh Bodine had two hits.

Mid-Atlantic Orthopedic 9, Allegany Dental 4: Minta Lovell and Rachel Amalfitano combined to pitch a two hitter, while Rachel Greenberg, Caroline Krieger, Carrie Johnson and Lovell each had two hits for Mid-Atlantic.

Conococheague Minor League

Valley Storage 16, Yankees 11: Blake Harne, Dylan Miles and Zach Hopkins each had three hits for Valley Storage. Steve Flessnor had two hits for the Yankees.

Lions 7, Redmen 6: For Lions, Andrew Moats had two hits. Austin Taylor had two hits for Redmen.
