Former heavyweight champ to speak at Pa. prison

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - "The Easton Assassin" will be coming to Franklin County Prison on Saturday, according to Warden John Wetzel.The heavyweight champion of the world from 1978 to 1985, Holmes will be at the prison to meet with and speak to inmates, Wetzel said.

"His story is inspirational in itself," Wetzel said of Holmes, 54, who compiled a 69-6 record with 44 knockouts during his career. "Maybe someone will be inspired by it," he said.

Born in Cuthbert, Ga., Holmes has lived in Easton, Pa., since 1957. Since leaving the ring, the former champion has established a number of businesses and become a motivational speaker for major corporations and charities.

Wetzel said the appearance by Holmes at the prison will not cost any taxpayer dollars. His appearance is being paid for with profits from the prison commissary and sponsorship by Everlast, the boxing equipment manufacturer.

Holmes is scheduled to speak at the prison at 1 p.m., Wetzel said.
