Jefferson County man dies in accident

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A 34-year-old Jefferson County man died early Saturday after his Jeep ran off the road and hit a tree, police said.West Virginia State Police Trooper J.C. Long said he did not want to release the man's name because he was not sure whether the man's family had been notified.

The single-vehicle accident happened at 2:15 a.m. on W.Va. 51, about one-eighth of a mile west of Shirley Road, Long said.

The man, driving a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, ran off the right side of the road before hitting the tree. The man's Jeep then overturned, Long said.

Trooper Mike Cole investigated the accident, but could not be reached for comment Saturday.

The man, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, Long said.

Long said police do not know why the man's Jeep ran off the road.

The accident remains under investigation.
