Trojans fall in title game

June 05, 2004

FREDERICKSBURG, Pa. - Hempfield spoiled Chambersburg's bid for a fifth PIAA District 3-AAA baseball title in six years, knocking off the Trojans 3-1 in the championship game Friday night."We just got outplayed tonight," Chambersburg coach Bob Thomas said. "They have a nice team."

Jay Enoch went the distance for Hempfield (24-4), allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Andrew Burke also pitched a complete game for Chambersburg (21-4), striking out 10 while allowing five hits and walking seven.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Drew McGwin walked, Cody Stinger singled and Tyler Brown hit an RBI single.

Hempfield answered with two runs in the third and one in the sixth, and Chambersburg went down quietly.

"We did nothing in the last two innings," Thomas said. "We didn't even get on base in the last two innings, and the walks kind of got us in trouble."

Chambersburg has at least one more game on its schedule. "Hopefully four more," Thomas said.

The Trojans (21-4) face District 1 champ West Chester East (22-2) in the first round of the 16-team state tournament Monday at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., beginning at 4 p.m.
