Area roundup - Hiser named first-team All-American

University of Pittsburgh senior outfielder/pitcher P.J. Hiser, a South Hagerstown graduate, was named a Louisville Slugger Division I First Team All-American, the first in the history of the Pitt program and the only Big East Conference member on the team.

Hiser, also named Big East Player of the Year, broke the school record for home runs (21) and RBI (67) in a single season and also ended the season sixth in the NCAA in slugging percentage (.758). On the mound, Hiser went 5-1 with a 4.40 ERA and one save, striking out 49 in 61 1/3 innings.

The Panthers won 38 games this season, the most since 1995, and went to the Big East Championships for the first time in four seasons.


Hagerstown 4, Brunswick 1

Jason Rhea hit a two-run single as part of Hagerstown's four-run first inning and Zack Swisher added two hits for the Braves (9-5).


Corey O'Brien went 3-for-3 for Brunswick (8-1).


Leonard hits hole-in-one

Benson Leonard made a hole-in-one on the 85-yard par 3 second hole at Yinglings Golf Center. Leonard used his lob wedge to accomplish the feat, witnessed by Tuck Robinson.


American Little League

Elks 8, FOP 4: Jordan Hatfield and Darien Hampton each had two hits for Elks.

Hagerstown Colt League

Goodwill Athletic Club 10, Steffey-Findley 4: Zachary Bucher had three hits and Chuck Dobson added two for Goodwill. Kevin Redman had two hits for Steffey-Findley.

Federal Little League

Kiwanis 10, American Legion 8: Jay Donoghue had two hits, including a grand slam, and Zack Shrieber had three hits for Kiwanis. Dakota Durning, Connor Spessard and Alex Shear each had three hits and Dusty Thompson had two for American Legion.

Alsatia 5, Lions 4: Darryl Priestly had the game-winning hit for Alsatia. Christian Binford threw a four-hitter for Lions.

Junior Interleague

Homewood 13, FOP 4: John Mason had four hits, Craig Oxyer three and Corey Golden two for Homewood. Tim Peake and Jonah Rock combined to strike out 11 for FOP.

Hagerstown PONY League

Firefighters 6, Elks 4: Patrick Phillips and Tyler Stevens led Firefighters with two hits each. Tim Leather and T.J. Smith had two hits each for Elks. Leather homered.

UAW 14, FOP 4: T.J. McCartney, A.J. Jamison and Tim Hamilton each had two hits to lead UAW. Adam Taylor had two hits for FOP.

Maugansville Little League

Maugans Oil 10, Ruritan 0: Brandon Glazer pitched a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and added two hits to lead Maugans Oil. Jake Bachell and Zack Snodderly combined for 10 strikeouts for Ruritan.

Maugansville Senior League

Shawley's 11, Ruritan 3: Adam Merrbaugh allowed only one hit, struck out eight and had two hits to lead Shawley's. Matt Campbell, Blake McCoy and Kent Worthington each had two hits. One of Worthington's hits was a home run.

Maugansville Junior League

Carbaugh's Tree Service 9-9, Spicher's 3-2: Allen Sandberg had two hits to lead Carbaugh's in the second game, while Jimmy Hill had two hits for Spicher's.

West End Little League

VFW 10, Western Enterprise 0: Allen Bowers threw a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts and had two hits, including a home run, to lead VFW. Kenny Kitchen, Casey Shifler and Dustin Rowland had two hits each in the win.

Valley Little League

SMRG 9, Total Lube 1: Anthony Minnich had three hits and three RBI to lead SMRG. Jacob Bucher had a pair of hits and teamed with Jordan Thurber and Marco Cardone for the win.

Sharpsburg Little League

Nutter's Ice Cream 14, Keedysville Ruritan 4: Aaron Snyder had four hits, while Matthew Harsh, Luke Harsh, Trey Bricker, Colin Crist and Grant Shafer each added three for Nutter's. Travis Leonardo and Ashton Binkley each had three hits for Ruritan.

Conococheague Little League

Lions 6, Taylor's Trucking 4: Tanner Maloy and Andrew Moats each had four hits and Ryan Rowland added three hits for Lions.

Conococheague Minor League

Tony's Pizza 10, Valley Storage 7: Jake Quigley had three hits, while T.J. Boyer added two and Sterling Christy struck out nine for Tony's. Blake Harne and Brandon Toloso combined for 12 strikeouts for Valley Storage.

Middle School Division

Nutter's Ice Cream 19, Scrapmania 0: Brynn Arnone and Darby Wisner each had three RBI and Courtney Kefauver and Karly Ketzell each drove in two while Kefauver had three hits and Arnone and Deana Sellick each added two for Nutters. Arnone, Kefauver and Amanda Cox combined to pitch a one-hitter.


Hagerstown Area Church Softball

Virginia Avenue 19, St. James 18: Joe Young and Jason Barney each had four hits to lead Virginia Avenue. Kyle Flook homered for St. James.

Crossroads Green 15, Crossroads Tan 11: Dave Barr had three hits for Crossroads Green. Dave Davis homered for Crossroads Tan.

Grace Brethren 17, Otterbein of Waynesboro 11: Kenny Shanholtz had five hits, while Brian Kelly and Sam Allen each had four to lead Grace.
