The Smithsburg Police Department recognized eight people, including its newest officer and five of its former chiefs, during the department's first awards luncheon Thursday.Officer James Bowers III received the Lifesaving Award as a result of his efforts to save a 19-year-old man who had lost consciousness as the result of a heroin overdose on Aug. 7, 2003.
Bowers, who had been out of the police academy for less than three weeks at the time, performed CPR on the victim until he regained a pulse.
Former Chiefs C. Steward McCleaf, Charles Enders, Vincent DuCellier, Thomas Bowers and Ralf Berger were awarded certificates of recognition, the police department said.
Officer Michael Neuland received a Certificate of Service and a uniform service ribbon for completing five years of service.
Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for her efforts in obtaining new quarters for the police department.
