Two injured in crash near Smithsburg

SMITHSBURG - Two motorists were taken to Washington County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries following a two-vehicle crash near Smithsburg Wednesday, Maryland State Police said.

Police said the crash, which caused both vehicles to roll over, was reported at about 5:08 p.m. on southbound Md. 66 near Chewsville Road.

Police said a 1999 Buick Century driven by Norma Jean Warner, 62, of 600 Spring Hill Road in Waynesboro, Pa., and a 2004 Subaru Outback driven by Kathy J. Wood, of 5489 Charlestown Road in Mercersburg, Pa., collided.

Police said Warner was charged with failure to yield to oncoming traffic on left turn.

The motorists' conditions were not available late Wednesday.

City police respond to assault, dog bite

The following incidents were reported to the Hagerstown Police Department Tuesday:

  • A report of domestic violence at 214 N. Cannon Ave. and 546 Salem Ave.

  • A dog bite incident at 120 N. Mulberry St. at about 6:30 p.m.

  • A second-degree assault report at 200 W. Franklin St. at about 4 p.m.

  • A pellet gun was confiscated at 350 Liberty St. at about 3:56 p.m.

  • A television and printer/scanner were stolen from 1302 Jay Drive.

Area man injured in pickup truck crash

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - A Frederick, Md., man was flown to Washington County Hospital after his Toyota pickup truck crashed near Walkersville, the Frederick County Sheriff's Department said.


Carlton Bishop, 65, of 6094 Quartz Circle, lost control of the truck in the 10500 block of Glade Road at about noon, deputies said. Deputies said the truck hit a concrete culvert and overturned.

Deputies said Bishop suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A Washington County Hospital spokeswoman said Bishop's condition was not available late Wednesday.

Police to close roads for memorial service

Beginning at 8 a.m. today, the Hagerstown Police Department will temporarily close to through traffic portions of South Walnut Street and South Prospect Street to accommodate parking for the memorial service for Mike Callas.

South Walnut Street will be closed to traffic between Antietam Street and Park Circle and South Prospect Street will be closed between Washington Street and South Walnut Street, the City of Hagerstown said in a release.

One lane of each street will remain open for use by emergency vehicles only.

Officers from the Hagerstown Police Department will direct traffic as necessary at the affected intersections. It is anticipated that the streets will be reopened to traffic no later than noon, the release said.

Law Enforcement Torch Run is today

FREDERICK, Md. - The 19th annual 2004 Law Enforcement Torch Run will begin today at 9:30 a.m. on U.S. 40 at the Washington-Frederick county line, the Frederick Police Department said.

Police said local officers, troopers, deputies and representatives from several other factions of the criminal justice system will carry the torch as participants run and cycle toward the route's end on Md. 26 in Ceresville, Md.

The event is being held to raise awareness and funds for the Maryland Special Olympics.

Vandals damage Pa. elementary school

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - A Franklin County, Pa., elementary school was vandalized and burglarized late Tuesday or early Wednesday, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Police said Duffield Elementary School at 2168 Mont Alto Road was entered through a basement door between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said a window was smashed and liquid was poured on the computer room server. A Zenith television and a Magnavox VCR were stolen from an upstairs hallway, police said.
