Tractor accident kills child

May 31, 2004

MOUNT AIRY, Md. - A 3-year-old boy riding on a John Deere tractor in his father's lap died as a result of injuries he sustained Friday afternoon when the tractor hit a large hole, throwing the boy onto the ground, where he was trapped under the right rear tire.

Maryland State Police in Frederick, Md., said Brian Horton was flown to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore shortly after the 12:24 p.m. incident by medevac helicopter.

The child was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m., police said.

Traveling through a field raking hay, the front tires of the tractor struck the large hole, causing the vehicle to shake violently, throwing the child from his father's lap, police said.

Trapped between the tractor tire and the ground, the child was freed after his father moved the tractor, police said.

Fire and rescue personnel from Winfield, Md., and Libertytown, Md., provided medical assistance at the 14908 Liberty Road scene. Trooper 1st Class Vinson Smith is in charge of the investigation.
