LEGION BASEBALLFunkstown goes 1-1

GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Funkstown went 1-1 at the Gaithersburg Memorial Day Tournament, beating Chaney Enterprises 9-5 before falling 4-3 to Damascus.

Matt Tedrick went 3-for-3 with four RBI and Josh Bowers (2-0) struck out eight in six innings to lead Funkstown past Chaney. Marty Kaetzel also had three hits in the win, while Orland Dean, Bryson Appel and Drew Crawford each added two.

Crawford had three hits and Appel two as Funkstown suffered its first loss of the season against Damascus.

Funkstown (7-1) will play in the tournament semifinals today at noon. The championship game follows at 3.


Hodnett prevails

Greg Hodnett of Memphis, Tenn., inherited the lead with two laps remaining when leader Steve Kinser made contact with a lapped car and led the rest of the way to win the 30-lap World of Outlaws sprint feature at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday night.

"We had a great race car tonight. It is unfortunate that Steve (Kinser) and Daryn (Pittman) got into trouble there in lapped traffic," Hodnett said. "We had to pass a lot of cars to get into position to take advantage of their misfortune. But we'll take it."


In other action, Roy Deese Jr. powered his way through the field to claim his third win of the season in the 25-lap late model feature.

Heat winners for the 30 sprints were Jason Myers, Mark Kinser and Joey Saldano. Paul McMahan won the B-Main and Steve Kinser set fast time of 15.224 second. Steve Kinser and Saldano won the dashes.

The Hagerstown Speedway will be in action three nights this week. On Thursday, the State Trooper Association will have its annual Kelly-Miller Brothers Circus, on Friday the Xtreme Dort Car Series will be making its only appearance of the year and will be joined by the Hoosier Tires late model sportsman and the late model sportsman will return Saturday with the Ernie's Salvage Yard Pure stocks and enduro cars to headline Student Night.


American Minor League

Eagles 12, Goodwill 11: Lane Hessong and Jonathan Hoffman each had two hits for Eagles. Brendon Colbert had four hits and Zac Stottlemyer had two for Goodwill.

Kerch's 13, VFW 1: Mike Boward and Shalynn Dickens each had two hits for Kerch's.

National Little League

FOP 11-10, AMVETS 1-0: Nick Gross had three hits, while Richie Casto, Brett Barr and Jordan Dickens each had two hits and Cory Shank homered to lead FOP in the first game. Shank had three hits and Nick Gross homered to power FOP in the second game.

South County Jr. League

Boonsboro Pharmacy 12, Cavetown 2: Jordan Young had three hits and Zach Clopper had two hits for Boonsboro. Robbie Veil had two hits for Cavetown.
