Health Department offers water safety tips

May 29, 2004

As pools open this Memorial Day weekend, the Washington County Health Department wants to ensure that the public understands the importance of water safety. The department provided the following tips for those venturing out on the waters this summer:

  • n Do not leave a child alone in or around water in the home. Empty water containers and place them out of the reach of children.

  • Do not leave a child alone at a pool or spa - not even for a minute. Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation and keep rescue equipment and emergency phone numbers by the pool.

  • Fencing, at least 5 feet high with self-closing and self-latching gates, should be installed around a home spa or pool. Fencing should prevent direct access from a house or yard and completely surround the spa or pool.

  • "Water wings" are not safety devices and are not substitutes for life jackets.

  • Do not dive into water that is less than 9 feet deep.

  • Anyone under the age of 14 should not drive a personal watercraft.
