Local Roundup - Funkstown stays unbeaten

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Nathan Himes drove in five runs while Josh Bowers and Tim Kellinger provide strong starts Sunday to lift Funkstown Post 211 to a 10-2, 5-2 doubleheader sweep of Cumberland.

Himes drove in three runs, including two with a double in the fifth inning, as Funkstown pulled away from Cumberland in the first game. Bowers pitches six innings, allowing one run while striking out 10.

Marty Kaetzel had two hits and two RBI while Bryson Appel added two hits.

Himes hit a two-run single to highlight Funkstown's three-run first inning in the nightcap. Kellinger struck out seven in five innings. Orland Dean added two hits and B.J. Soto homered for Funkstown (4-0).


Brunswick 5, Hagerstown 4

Scott Frye scored the game-winning run on a single by Gerrad Talkington in the bottom of the eighth inning and Brunswick edged Hagerstown.


Jayson Mobley hit a three-run home run and Andy Maught added two hits for the Orioles (6-0).

J.R. Fitzwater homered and Kevin Crawford had two hits for Hagerstown.


National Minor League

Funkstown Legion 11, Antietam Fire Co. 1: Bryce Nigh and Todd Pule combined to strike out 10 in four innings, while Arthur Nicholl added two hits for Funkstown in the first-half championship game.

Conoco. Minor League

M&T Bank 16, Reid's 6: Caleb Myers had three hits, including two doubles, and Wyatt Scriever had two hits for M&T Bank.

Minor Interleague

Hagerstown Trust 1, Youngblood Studios 11: Alex Datillio had three hits and Raven Cogan, David Albin, Zach Snyder and Nicholas Berchock each had two hits for Youngblood. Kevin Davis hit a two-run home run. Ryan Shaw and Bobby Plume had two hits for Hagerstown Trust.

Valley Little League

Eagles 13, Play-It-Again Sports 10: Brandon Butrick homered and Ryan Carroll had four hits to lead Eagles.

Halfway Little League

Gibney's 9, Lions 4: Josh Green had 11 strikeouts and Will Bowen had two hits to lead Gibney's. Tyler Bikle had three hits for Lions.

American Minor League

Eagles 9, Kerch's 8: Ben Murphy had two hits for Eagles.

Goodwill 14, Antietam Fire Dept. 8: Brendon Colvert had two hits for Antietam.

West End Minor League

FOP 12, Hopewell 11: Aaron Grossman and Corey Reasoner had two hits each to lead FOP. Rick Lloyd had an inside-the-park home run and Bryson Reeder added two hits for Hopewell.

Hagerstown PONY League

Firefighters 10, Jeter 6: J.J. O'Neill had four hits, including a home run, to lead Firefighters. Tommy Evans had two hits for Jeter.

Redmen 9, FOP 4: Cody McCarthy had two hits for FOP.

Hagerstown Floors 4, F&M 2: Tyler Fath had 14 strikeouts to lead Hagerstown Floors. Tim Jacobson homered for F&M.

Elks 14, Hagerstown Floors 4: Josh Conway had three hits, while Tim Leather, Henry Fitzgerald and Evan Dixon each added two for Elks. Leather homered. Tysen Palmer homered for Hagerstown Floors.

Hagerstown Colt League

UAW 14, BJ's 1: Brad Dellinger threw a three-hitter and Miles Brown homered twice to lead UAW. Cody Poffenberger, Brandon Rohrer and Kyle Kain added two hits.

Maugansville Jr. League

Pepsi 20, Carbaugh's 12: Craig Martin had four hits, while Kirkland Jones and Nathan Hardin each added three to lead Pepsi. Mike Rice had three hits and Bryan Cornett had two for Carbaugh's.

Conoco. Junior League

Sportsland 12, Redmen 2: Aaron Hershberger had five hits, while John Sanders and Steve McKimmy each added four to lead Sportsland. Derrick Harrell had two hits for Redmen.

Elementary Division Tournament

Antietam Title 8, Debbie's Soft Serve 5: Allison Holmes had three hits, including a home run, while Amber Welch, Becky Young, Sara Angle, Katie Slifer had two hits for Antietam Title, which won the championship. Welch and Nicole Fulton combined for 14 strikeouts. Danielle Beaver had two hits and Dani Hudson had three hits for Debbie's Soft Serve.

Debbie's Soft Serve 14, T & JJ's: 3: Karah Knight, Katie Sprecher, Danielle Beaver and Sara Rishell each had two hits for Debbie's. Logan Bachtell and Sara Rishell also homered.

Middle School Division

Nutter's Ice Cream 8, B.J. Embroidery 7: Amanda Cox had three hits and Jessica Manuel added two hits for Nutter's.

D.M. Bowman 8, Cellular One 6: Jennifer Bowlus homered, Kenzie Strickland and Kassondra Topper went 3-for-4 and Alexia Fisher, Felicia Bohn, Megan Tomlin and Courtney Bowlus had two hits for Bowman. Jamie Donato had two hits for Cellular One.


Jerry's Sports qualifies for nationals

Jerry's Sports of the Hub City Softball League finished second in the USSSA National Qualifier in Mercersburg, Pa., over the weekend.

Sid Schupp had a .714 average to lead the team, which will compete at nationals in Ocean City, Md. on Aug. 28.
