Local Roundup - Eagles eliminate Bulldogs from W.Va. playoffs

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Duncan Williams went 3-for-5 with a triple, double and five RBI as Hedgesville beat Martinsburg 12-2 in the West Virginia Region II Section 4 playoffs Thursday night, eliminating the Bulldogs.

Matt Yurish (7-0) allowed two runs on three hits while striking out nine in four innings.

Also for the Eagles (22-8), Aaron Whitford went 2-3 with two RBI, Matt Bartgis went 2-for-4 wtih a double and two RBI, Corey Chaney was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Bryce Blair was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Tony Powell went 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Hedgesville hosts Jefferson tonight at 7:30.

Catoctin 6, Brunswick 2

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Will Delawter pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and hit a two-run homer to lead Catoctin past Brunswick in the Class 1A South semifinals.

Jake Yocum added two hits for Catoctin (14-8).

Blaine Keyser drove in both of Brunswick's runs with a two-run homer in the third inning.



Allegany 3, Smithsburg 1

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Kasie Beaver went 2-for-3 and drove in Smithsburg's only run as the Leopards (12-8) fell to Allegany in the Class 1A West semifinals.

Catoctin 30, W.E.B. Du Bois 1

THURMONT, Md. - Sam Weaver led Catoctin's 25-hit attack with three hits, including her state single-season record 11th home run, and her seven RBI gave her 46 for the season to also set a record as the Cougars routed Du Bois in the Class 1A South semifinals.

Casey Hertel also had three hits for Catoctin (20-2), while Lauren Wildasin, Amanda Snyder, Tasha Ammenhauser, Kelly Stiles, Kasey Stiles, Sam Geisinger and Sam Valentine each had two hits for the Cougars.

Beall 6, Williamsport 0

FROSTBURG, Md. - Kacey Kahl hit a two-run triple to ignite a five-run third inning to lead Beall to a victory over Williamsport in the Class 1A West semifinals.

Beall pitcher Katie Rephan had a no-hitter until two outs in the sixth inning when Courtney Hutchinson and Sarah Harden hit concecutive singles.

Amy Williams had two hits for Beall. Williamsport ends the season with a 10-11 record.


Rams' Drummond honored

Shepherd University pitcher/catcher Charlie Drummond has been named the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Region Player of the Year by a vote of regional head coaches.

Drummond, a first team All-North Atlantic Region choice for the third consecutive year, led the WVIAC Tournament champion Rams with a league-record 19 home runs. Drummond also led the WVIAC in slugging percentage (.907) and saves (8) while batting .414.

Shippensburg University's Andy Dangler, a Chambersburg graduate, was named to the all-region second team.

Dangler hit .319 with seven home runs and a team-high 46 RBI.


National Little League

AMVETS 10, Crampton 4: Chris Smith had three hits and Blake Bandeff and Dylan Appel each had two hits for AMVETS. Tyler Kalkbrenner, Trevor Haupt, Dez Griffin and Trey Hinchen had two hits each for Crampton.

National Minor League

Funkstown Legion 13, Long Meadow Exxon 12: Brenden Keefer had two hits, while Shaun Keefer had the game-winning RBI for Funkstown. Steven Keith had two hits for Long Meadow.

Wash. Co. Girls Softball

Elementary Division

FOP 23, Crampton 1: Faith Ricker and Danielle Dayhoff had three hits each, while Sue Rose Delemeau and Olivia Cline had two each for FOP.

South County Senior League

B.A.A.A. 12, Cascade American Legion 2: Ira Redman went 4-for-4, Roff Collins and Curtis Wolfe had two hits each and Will Dayhoff and Danny Stitely each homered for B.A.A.A. Nathan Minnich homered for Cascade.

Halfway Little League

Gehr 16, Gibney's 4: Winning pitcher Chris McSherry had three hits, including a grand slam and another homer, while Robbie Vinson and Devin Baker had two hits each for Gehr. Josh Green homered and Nick Myers had two hits for Gibney's.

American Little League

Funkstown 12, Goodwill 8: Alex Brooks had three hits for Funkstown. Darius Smith had two hits, including a home run, and Aarom Monath had two hits for Goodwill.

Elks 11, Goodwill 2: Josh Fazenbaker had three hits and Ryan Stottlemeter added two for Elks. Tim Butler had two hits for Goodwill.

Hancock Little League

Astros 15, Tigers 2: Travis Barthalow had two hits and struck out 11, while Dylan Whiteside had three hits, including a home run, and Brian Robair had two hits for the Astros.

Hagerstown PONY League

F&M 3, Redmen 1: Jared Ferguson and Tim Cole combined on a two hitter for F&M with Ferguson striking out eight.

Jeter 10, Eagles 7: For Jeter, Andrew Stout had three hits while Tommy Evans and Kevin Kocsis each had two hits. Kyle Beers and Brock Kettoman each had solo home runs for Eagles.

South Mountain Little League

Lions 6, Thompson's Gas 3: Troy Hartle had two hits for Lions and Brad Etzler had two hits for Thompson's.

West End Little League

Coca Cola 9, AFLCIO 4: Dwight Boward threw a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and hit a home run for Coca-Cola, while Thomas Barrick had four hits and Brooks Schlotterbeck had two hits. Tanner Domer had two hits AFLCIO.
