Pet of the week

May 21, 2004

Sammi, a 3-year-old female, was found with two other adult cats and several kittens. They were abandoned on the grounds of the Humane Society of Washington County after business hours. The cats, possibly thrown over the railing on Interstate 81, were huddled together under a piece of wood when a staff member found them. Sammi has a gray and white coat, loves to "talk," and is very affectionate.

Pet tip: Plants poisonous to pets

Summer is often a time when people fertilize lawns and work in their gardens. But beware: Plant food, fertilizer, and insecticides can be fatal if pets ingests them. In addition, more than 700 plants can produce physiologically active or toxic substances in sufficient amounts to cause harmful effects in animals. For a list of plants that are dangerous to pets and other animals, contact the Humane Society of Washington County.

For more information, or to become a volunteer, visit the Humane Society of Washington County at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown or call 301-733-2060.
