City to increase trash collection fees

May 19, 2004|by GREGORY T. SIMMONS

The Hagerstown City Council voted Tuesday during a special session to introduce an ordinance to increase trash collection fees by $8.17 a year in response to rising costs. The ordinance will be up for approval at next Tuesday's regular voting session along with several other ordinances related to the city's fiscal 2005 budget. The proposal would increase the $91 annual charge to $99.17.

City Engineer Rodney Tissue has said the increases are needed because Washington County increased the tipping fees the county collects for garbage dumped at its landfill and BFI, the contractor that collects trash for the city, is expected to increase its fee.

The rate increase is among more than two dozen proposed as part of the city's $95.6 million fiscal 2005 budget.
