The Water Environment Federation (WEF) announces Jarrett Remsberg, a student at Middletown High School in Middletown, Md., as a 2004 State Winner of the U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition 'the most prestigious youth award for a water-related science project.

Jarrett, who was selected for his project, "Effects of Dietary Phosphorus on the Excretion of Total Phosphorus and Soluble Phosphorus in the Feces of Lactating Dairy Cows," will represent Maryland at the national competition in Denver, Col., June 10-12.

The U.S. winner will receive $2,500 and an all-expense-paid trip to Stockholm, Sweden, for the international competition.In addition, the student'school and teacher will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively, toward enhancing science education.




Ellen Hudson of Hagerstown, a student at Hagerstown Community College, was recently named to Team 1 of the 2004 All-Maryland Academic Team.

This is a recognition program sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for the two-year college, and USA Today to honor students with outstanding academic records and with outstanding service records to their colleges and communities.

Hudson was nominated by HCC based on her grade point average, her leadership role in Pi Theta, and her community service in such organizations as the Lions Club, Girl Scouts and her church. Ellen also volunteers at the National Cancer Institute.

Hudson was honored at a banquet May 5 at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, Md., along with 29 other students from across the state.




Big Pool resident Kathryn Elizabeth Michael graduated from Cedarville University (Ohio) with high honors and a bachelor of science in nursing degree on May 1.

A 2000 graduate of Grace Academy in Hagerstown, Michael is the daughter of George and Cheryl Michael of Big Pool.




Matthew Thomas Danver, of Frederick, Md., was awarded a degree with a major in Business Administration from Flagler College, St. Augustine, Fla. Danver also received the Business Administration Award for Academic Achievement.




Sarah L. O'Brien, a senior at Mount St. Mary's College, recently presented her senior honors project, titled, "The Specific Interactions of YopB and YopD with their Chaperone SycD and its Effect on the Yersinia pestis Type Three Secretion System."

The Honors Program provides a unique opportunity for talented seniors to learn from expert faculty through a collaborative research project. The project serves as a capstone experience in the honors students' major and as a springboard to graduate school or a profession.

Senior honors students conducted seminars in the fields of biology, business, communications, economics, education, English, mathematics, philosophy, political science, psychology, theology and the visual arts.

A native of Hagerstown, O'Brien is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. O'Brien.




Spring Hoopengarner of Hagerstown has earned a diploma in Computer Programming (Online) at Vatterott College in St. Joseph, Mo.

Vatterott College is a private career college offering specialized, technology-focused, hands-on training programs in the fastest growing industries. The St. Joseph campus offers programs focused on the information technology, healthcare, cosmetology and technical trade Industries.
