May 18, 2004

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I really wish people who call Mail Call would get their facts straight. Saddam and Iraq had nothing to do with Sept. 11. All the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia - almost all of them, a few of them were from Yemen. They trained under bin Laden in Afghanistan. They had no connections to Iraq; in fact, Saddam despised bin Laden because of his religion. Get your facts straight before you call in."

"I have a cell phone that I would like to donate to a worthy cause. Can someone call in and let me know who accepts used cell phones?"

"Pertaining to the hospital: To the city and county officials, the ideal location for the new hospital would be at the Allegheny Power Company, which is coming up for sale. The grounds there is more than enough room to handle the parking and the hospital and there would be less road building. At the same time, Highway 70, 81, 11 and 40 are all close by. I think this is the best place and would be a lot less expensive."

"I had surgery at the Robinwood Surgery Center last week. The staff out there is outstanding, right from the receptionist in the front office to every one of the nurses and attendants in the back. They really make you comfortable before and after surgery, they are so kind. They keep a close watch on all their patients to meet all their needs. You don't always get this kind of attention at other places. I recommend anyone needing surgery that can have it handled out there, to tell your surgeon about this facility. God bless them all."

"We would like to thank Dr. Wagner for saving our cat's life. We have been taking her to another vet and they didn't know what was wrong with her. So we took her to Dr. Wagner, he did surgery and she is doing great. If you have an animal that has any problem, I can guarantee you that he can fix it and if he can't, he will tell you and won't keep taking your money when not needed. Thanks again, Dr. Wagner, from Denny and Nancy Bowers."

"I miss Bob Parasiliti's column, 'Sun Spots,' that used to appear in the Sunday paper during the season. Also where is the column 'Where Are They Now,' which is about former Suns players and other former athletes from the area? I wish you would bring them back."

"I am a senior that is living on a fixed income, which is only $600-some a month. I have a problem with my front steps coming loose from the porch out front that needs fixed. Is there anyone who could give me an estimate on how much they would charge to fix it? I need it fixed badly because that is the entrance I have to use and I have to use a walker. My number is 301-791-1775."

"Where is the money that was found in Iraq is and why didn't we use that money to help rebuild Iraq back instead of us giving them money? I saw on TV where soldiers are coming back here selling artifacts from Iraq. That seems unethical, too. The reason why we can't get the gas prices dropped is because of Bush, his parents and his oil company."

"To the lady who jumped in front of me at the ATM on South Potomac Street on Friday morning. You need a lesson in manners because you certainly don't have any."

"This is Annie and I called Mail Call last year and asked for irises or flags because I didn't have any and couldn't afford to buy any. I would like to share a great big smile to everyone who called me and shared a lot more than irises and I really appreciate my beautiful flowers that are blooming wonderfully. We have a wonderful community and I hope everyone realizes that all you have to do is ask."

"I am reading Thursday's Mail Call and it says. 'This is a message for Marie and Marty, come on back, we need you real bad.' There is a Marie and Marty in my family, could you please specify, 'come back where' and if we are the right ones. We left some place. Specify where the place you want Marie and Marty to come back to."

"I was just wondering if everyone in the 600 block of North Mulberry Street is wondering if they are that nosy neighbor."
