May 18, 2004|by DON AINES

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Retired borough police sergeant Glenn K. Manns began his new job Monday night when he was sworn in by Mayor Thomas Newcomer as Third Ward councilman. Manns, of 332 Suelinn Drive, replaces Carl Helman, who resigned April 23 because he moved out of Chambersburg.

Manns was appointed by the council Monday, May 10, after being recommended to fill the vacancy over two other applicants, Kay Landman and Harold E. Curtis.

Helman had recommended Landman as his replacement, but Manns was selected to fill the vacancy by a committee made up of Council Vice President Robert Wareham, Councilman John Redding and Councilwoman Elaine Swartz, who also represents the Third Ward.

Manns will serve out the remainder of Helman's term, which expires at the end of 2005.

Manns retired March 30 after 28 years with the police department. He has lived in the Third Ward for 26 years.
