Roundup - Hiser in running for Howser Trophy

University of Pittsburgh senior outfielder/pitcher P.J. Hiser, a South Hagerstown graduate, has been named one of 30 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given annually to the top player in college baseball.

Hiser leads the Big East in home runs (19) and slugging percentage (.798), is 16-for-16 in stolen-base attempts and is batting .369 with 62 hits and 53 runs scored. He is 5-0 on the mound with a 3.90 ERA and 47 strikeouts.

Hiser is also a leading candidate for Big East Player of the Year.


Grace 12, Shalom Christian 1

Darren Sweeney had three hits and earned the complete-game victory as Grace Academy rolled past Shalom Christian to win the Mason Dixon Christian Conference Tournament championship.

Eric Hess had two hits, including a three-run triple in the fourth, and Ryan Myers had two hits and drove in three runs for the Knights (12-2). Matt Stein added two hits and two RBI.

St. Andrews 23, St. James 4

ST. JAMES - Richard Newby had two hits and John Gahan doubled as St. James (0-17, 0-12) dropped its season finale to Mid-Atlantic Conference foe St. Andrews.


Broadfording second in MDCC

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - After knocking off Grace Academy 9-5 in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference tournament opener, Broadfording dropped the championship game to Cumberland Valley Christian, 11-0, for a second-place finish.

Morgan Brown had three hits, including a double, while Chris Mehaffie added two hits to lead the Lions (9-10) in the opener. Nina Crist had three hits.

Cindel Young had two of three Broadfording hits in the championship game.

Tessa Armstrong homered and struck out 12 for CVCS.

Cumb. Valley 5, Waynesboro 2

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Paige Tanner doubled and tripled and Jessie Miller had two hits in a losing effort for Waynesboro (9-9, 7-7).

Chestnut Ridge 19 McConnellsburg 0

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Mandy DeShong had McConnellsburg's only hit in the Spartans' loss to Chestnut Ridge.

Goretti 24, Notre Dame 6

MIDDLEBURG, Va. - Lauren Barton hit a two-run homer and St. Maria Goretti exploded for a 13-run second inning and 11-run fourth inning for a victory over Notre Dame Academy.

Steph Klipp added a two-run triple and Katie Martin had two hits and two RBI for the Gaels (3-18).

Sharpsburg Little League

Nutter's Ice Cream 18, Keedysville Ruritan 14: Evan Rosenthal, Aaron Snyder and Trey Bricker led Nutter's with four hits each. Tess Hebert, Bryce Dickens and Luke Harsh each had three hits, while Colin Crist, Matthew Nolan and Clayton Keesee added two hits. Ashton Binkley had four hits to lead Keedysville, while Keye Garmen, Dakota Smith, Tyler Guntry and Ryan Betson each had three hits. Travis Leonardo, Austin Keadle, Dalton Jones, Corey Robertson and Olivia Lowman all had two hits.

Company One 14, Chase 8: Eddie Seabright led Company One with four hits, Rodney Flora added a two-run homer and Kyle Murphy, Jake Mann and J.T. Hutchinson each had two hits for Company One. Ernie Shoemaker and Daniel Friend each had two hits for Chase.

Donnie's Plumbing 6, Scott's Speed Shop 4: Tanner Castle had two hits, including a home run, for Donnie's. Owen Ridenour had two hits and Aaron Mong added three hits for Scott's.

Burkholder's 16, Ruritan 13: Corey Morgan hit two doubles and struck out seven, while Colby Waugh, Chris Brockway and Andrew Benner had three hits each for Burkholder's. Jake Bachtell led Ruritan with three hits, including a grand slam and a solo home run, while Zack Snodderly also added three hits.

Antietam Title 20, Paul Crampton Construction 2: Amber Welch pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts for Antietam. Sarah Angle had three hits, including a home run, Gabrielle Smallwood homered twice and Allison Holmes, Welch, Becky Young, Hailey Payne, Gabrielle Smallwood and Kayla Payne each had two hits for Antietam. Welch and Young each homered.

GrayCo Construction 24, FOP 6: Regina Palmer and Ariel Grissinger each had four hits, Allie Nickels had three and Ryan Markoff and Jessica Hartman each added two to lead GrayCo. Faith Ricker homered and Olivia Cline had two hits for FOP.

Mid-Atlantic Orthopedic 21, Larry Allen 3: Carrie Johnson homered and Beth Zimmerman added a three-run triple to lead Mid-Atlantic. Britni Smith had two hits for Larry Allen.

South County Senior League

BAAA 9, Chewsville Lions 3: Roth Collins had three hits while Danny Stitely, Mike Coe and Caleb Hudlow had two hits each for BAAA. Vinny Mills, Chad Harner, Luke Kerr and Dustin Perrott had two hits each for Chewsville.

Conococheague Little League

Redmen 6, Post 202 3: Austin Taylor and Jordan Palladino each had three hits for Redmen, while Taylor and Nathan Willis combined to throw a three-hitter. Stephen Christy had two hits for Post 202.
