Va. man charged with embezzlement

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A Winchester, Va., man has been arrested in connection with an embezzlement case at Charles Town Races & Slots, court records state.

Dwayne Allen Funk, 26, of 1111A Allen Drive, has been charged with embezzlement and conspiracy to commit embezzlement, according to Jefferson County Magistrate Court records.

Funk is free on $10,000 bond.

West Virginia State Police Trooper James C. Long said he was contacted by a track official on May 11 about an employee and a former employee who had embezzled $1,020 from the track, court records said.

On one occasion, a customer payout of $300 was being conducted. A supervisor was told that a dispenser did not pay out the money and a "cash override" for the same amount was obtained, court records allege.


On a second occasion, a customer payout of $720 was made and the money was given to another man who left the track, court records allege.

No charges filed in Boonsboro crash

BOONSBORO - A Boonsboro man struck a parked car and part of a building Wednesday night near his home, the Washington County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies said the crash, reported about 7:30 p.m., occurred at 21343 Mount Lena Road.

Deputies said a car traveled through a couple of yards and hit a parked car and a post at 21343 Mount Lena Road near Boonsboro.

The driver, Michael Beitel, 54, of Mount Lena Road in Boonsboro, blacked out prior to the accident due to an existing medical condition, deputies said.

Beitel was taken Washington County Hospital for observation because of the blackout, deputies said.

No charges were filed Wednesday, deputies said.

Police respond to traffic, assault calls

The Hagerstown Police Department reported the following incidents for Wednesday:

  • Christina M. Oldham, 31, was charged with driving while intoxicated in the first block of East Washington Street.

  • A rape/sexual assault was reported at 820 Lavale St., and about 15 weapons were confiscated. The investigation is ongoing.

  • There were reports of loitering, drug and public drinking problems in the 600 block of George St.

  • A Hot Shot blue Murray bicycle was found at Madison Avenue and Washington Street.

Pa. motorcyclist hurt in I-70 crash

A Pennsylvania motorcyclist was taken to Washington County Hospital after crashing early Wednesday evening, Maryland State Police said.

Police said Beth M. Woodworth, 22, whose address was not released, crashed just before 6:45 p.m. on Interstate 70 east of Hancock.

She was taken to the hospital by ambulance, police said.

No additional details were released Wednesday night.
