Safety concerns prompt access changes

May 08, 2004|by TARA REILLY

Citing safety concerns, Washington County permanently will close access to Poffenberger Road from Sharpsburg Pike on May 17, Chief Engineer Terry McGee said Friday.

Vehicles will be able to access Poffenberger Road from the intersection at Battlecreek Boulevard and Sharpsburg Pike (Md. 65), just north of Poffenberger Road.

McGee said site distance is a problem at the Poffenberger Road and Sharpsburg Pike intersection, south of Hagerstown.

He didn't know how many accidents have occurred at that intersection because the county hasn't tracked that, he said.

Plans to close access to Poffenberger Road from Sharpsburg Pike have been in place for about 10 years, McGee said.

Signs announcing the realignment already have been erected in the area, he said.

McGee said site distance also is a problem at the intersection of Rench Road and Sharpsburg Pike.

The county eventually hopes to move the access point from Sharpsburg Pike to Rench Road more to the north, he said.
