Hearing is set Tuesday on closing of Letterkenny Elementary Sch

LURGAN, Pa. - The Chambersburg School Board will hold a public hearing Tuesday on a proposal to close Letterkenny Elementary School.The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. in Lurgan Elementary School, 8888 Roxbury Road, Lurgan.

The board voted on Feb. 11 to hold a public hearing for taking comment on whether the school should be closed.

Built in 1954, Letterkenny has approximately 85 students in first through fifth grades, according to district figures. It is one of the district's 18 elementary schools.

If the board votes to close the school, the students would be transferred to Lurgan Elementary, which has about 180 students, according to district figures.

At the Feb. 11 meeting, the board awarded a $2.2 million performance contract to Chevron Energy Solutions Co. to modernize Lurgan Elementary.

Under the Pennsylvania school code, the district must hold the hearing three months prior to taking a vote on whether to close a school, Business Manager Rick Vensel said at the Feb. 11 meeting.
