School lunch costs rising

May 05, 2004|by SCOTT BUTKI

For the second year in a row, the Washington County Board of Education has approved increasing the cost of school lunches. The 10-cent increase in lunch prices approved Tuesday goes into effect July 1.

The school system currently charges $1.50 for elementary school lunches and $1.75 for secondary school lunches, said Gary Dodds, Washington County Public Schools food and nutrition supervisor.

He suggested - and the board agreed by a 6-0 vote - to raise the prices by a dime to $1.60 for elementary school lunches and $1.85 for secondary school lunches.

The price increase is needed to balance the Food and Nutrition Services annual budget, Dodds told the board.

He included in a written report comparing school meal prices at school systems in other Maryland counties.

Frederick, Garrett and Allegany counties charge more for school lunches, even factoring in the increase approved Tuesday, according to the comparison.

During Tuesday's meeting, Dodds was presented with a written resolution designating May 5 as School Food and Nutrition Service Personnel Day. The public probably isn't aware that the school system feeds more than 15,000 students a day, Schools Superintendent Elizabeth Morgan said.
