Weaver's ninth homer sets state record

THURMONT, Md. - Sam Weaver went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI and held Brunswick to three hits as No. 2 Catoctin defeated No. 6 Brunswick 12-2 in a five-inning MVAL Antietam contest on Monday.

Weaver's home run was her ninth this season, breaking a Maryland single-season record.

Alecia Brandenburg went 3-for-3 and Jess Kreitz added an RBI double for the Cougars, who benefitted from nine Railroaders errors.

Brunswick falls to 9-3, 6-3.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Jenna Clark, Jenny Finafrock, Michelle Scales and Kayla Lange each had two hits for Hedgesville (16-5).

HANCOCK - Katie Golden had two hits and three RBI for Hancock. Adrienne Kesecker struck out nine for the Panthers (10-5).

Smithsburg 6, Boonsboro 2

BOONSBORO - Annie Brucksch hit a sixth-inning, two-run homer and Casey Beaver added two hits for Smithsburg.

Alyssa Reed earned the win for the Leopards (10-6, 9-3), striking out eight.

Janet Cole and Kourtney Marshall had two hits for Boonsboro.

FREDERICK, Md. - Jessi Hanlon, Samantha Cole and Devon Moore each had two hits for Thomas Johnson (2-11, 1-10) in a nine-inning loss to Frederick.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Chelese Wright hit a two-run single and Tessa Armstrong and Anna Steenstra added RBI singles for Cumberland Valley Christian.

Maegan Taylor hit an RBI single for Broadfording.

CARLISLE, Pa. - Irvin Sleighter pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts to lead Chambersburg over Carlisle.

Andy Carter and Jared Olson each had two hits and Josh Frey added two RBI for the Trojans (12-2, 10-1).

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - After running off 11 straight wins, Hedgesville has dropped three in a row after being swept by Handley.

Dirk Webb was a tough-luck loser in the first game, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out six in a complete-game effort. But the Eagles (14-7) managed only two hits.

Webb and Duncan Williams hit two-run homers in the second game, while Corey Chaney went 4-for-4 with an RBI double for Hedgesville.

CLEAR SPRING - Leo Schill hit a grand slam, and Andy Taylor went 4-for-4 while earning the win for Williamsport.

Taylor struck out eight and hit a two-run homer for the Wildcats (13-3, 9-3). Nick Adenhart hit a two-run homer.

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Notre Dame Academy unleashed a pair of home runs in a five-run third inning on the way to its win over Jefferson, which committed five errors.

Josh Simons had two hits and drove in three runs for the Cougars (14-8) and Adam Kessel had two hits and scored twice.

PAW PAW, W.Va. - Josh Rupenthal and Bryan Powers each had two hits and drove in runs for Hancock.

Jeff Willison struck out six for the Panthers (5-10).

Bonano wins 3 golds

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Dickinson College senior Emilie Bonano, a South Hagerstown graduate, captured three golds and a silver at the Centennial Conference Championships Sunday.

Bonano won the 100 (12.63) and 200 (25.86) and anchored the 400 relay (49.69) to first place and the 1,600 relay (4:01.29) to second.


Shepherd's Bradshaw four shots off the pace

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Shepherd University's David Bradshaw fired an opening round 76 at the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament and is four shots back with two rounds left.
