Motorcyclist dies in U.S. 522 crash

April 30, 2004

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - A Berkeley Springs motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene following a 3:15 p.m. accident involving a tractor-trailer rig on U.S. 522 north of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia State Police said in a news release.

According to police, Leonard Gleason, 53, no address available, tried to stop his motorcycle for a line of traffic that was stopped for a vehicle making a turn. Gleason lost control and the motorcycle slid into the oncoming lane of traffic.

The driver of the tractor-trailer tried unsuccessfully to avoid striking Gleason by going off the pavement, police said.

The left fuel tank of the truck ruptured and its contents spilled onto the highway.

The fuel spill was contained until a hazardous materials team arrived.

Both lanes of U.S. 522 were closed to traffic for nearly three hours, police said.
