April 29, 2004

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Wow, wonders never cease! The county is finally enforcing the no junk car law. That's good, because in my area, there have been cars and trucks sitting for years with no tags on them. Thank God for our city and county officials."

"The driveway off of South Potomac leading to the Dumpster area is in bad condition. I suggest that the city try to have it improved before the next Dumpster pickup."

"Concerning the Clinton and Bush administrations when considering the 9/11 attack on our mainland. Think of it this way: The previous administration had eight years to deal with terror, President Bush only had eight months. Besides, when Richard Clarke admitted under oath that 9/11 could not have been prevented, then if that is a fact, then to continue the blame game, it's like beating a dead horse. The sharpest minds in our nation were totally unprepared for such an evil attack unheard of before 9/11."

"I am calling in support of President Bush's Iraqi policy. We didn't ask for 9/11, they gave it to us, not Iraq, but the terrorists. It's either we go over there and take care of things or they come over here and take care of it for us. So I don't think we should be bickering about what Bush is doing. I think we should be giving him our full support. Nobody wants to see any of our family killed by terrorists and if we don't do something, it's going to keep on happening. It's going to be tough and it's terrible on our kids and I know I would be worried to death if my kid was over there, but we have to give Bush our support. Because like I said, if we don't go get them, they will come get us."

"I hope everyone in Hagerstown had the opportunity to go and see 'Li'l Abner' at South High. Those kids really worked hard on that play and you can tell that they enjoyed every minute of it. It was a very eventful evening."

"Now that spring is here, people are complaining about car stereos or trucks making too much noise, but the worse offenders are the people with Harleys and straight pipes. Those things will literally make the windows of your house vibrate. But the police seem to totally ignore them. I think it's time that the police start enforcing all the noise ordinances and cite the drivers with straight pipes on their Harleys."

"To the person who wanted to know if there is an MS support group that meets. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at Marshall Street School at 7 p.m. If you have any questions call Mail Call and leave your number."

"Are there any churches in the community that can provide transportation for someone who is in a wheelchair?"

"I just read in Monday's paper about the children not going home hungry. A school in St. Joseph, Miss., each Friday evening, she sends home food with every child to make sure they don't go hungry over the weekend. But this is what should be done with Washington County. Instead of the teachers taking home leftovers, they should pack a bag for the children to take it home."

"I live on East Franklin Street and I witnessed a fight between a teen and an older male. I heard the teen was stabbed. Why is this older man still walking my street? Is he a danger to us? Can the family respond to me? By the way, how is the teen that was stabbed doing?"

"I am tired of hearing you wine about the money that the County Commissioners are going to give to the Humane Society. A lot of you are saying they shouldn't give them any at all. Well if we pay $35,000 or so a year to keep prisoners, most of them are from the city. If we are paying that much a year to keep a prisoner, then we can afford to pay a few dollars a year to give them a chance. Those animals never did anything to anyone, maybe we are sending the wrong ones to be euthanized."

"I just wanted to say thanks again to the lady at Act II on Monday who generously gave my daughter a little dance costume. You made her day. She wore it the minute we got home. She loves it. I am sorry I didn't get your name, but again, thank you so much."

"I want to comment about the Mail Call in Monday about out-of-town cars and a van at a local landfill. If you want to see out-of-town tags, visit the Williamsport School District Complex, especially when parents pick up their children. Six out of 10 cars have West Virginia license plates on them. I guess nobody is concerned or something would have been done by now."
