Area roundup - No. 4 Eagles knock off Applemen, 10-5

PREP BASEBALL



HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Duncan Williams and Bryce Blair each homered in a six-run first inning and No. 4 Hedgesville rolled past Musselman 10-5 on Thursday night.

Cody Seibert added a two-run double in the first inning and Matt Bartgis belted a two-run homer in the fourth for Hedgesville (11-4). Bartgis finished with three hits and three RBI.

Mark Darlington homered for Musselman.

Heritage 12, Calvary 8


Winning pitcher Drew Kidd had four hits to lead Heritage Academy to a Mason Dixon Christian Conference win over Calvary Christian.

Stephen Barthlow added three hits, including two doubles, and Josh Hoy added two hits for the Eagles (3-3, 3-3).




PREP SOFTBALL



Broadfording 12, Grace 5


Leslie Brown had three hits, including a three-run triple, for Broadfording Christian Academy as the Lions beat Grace Academy in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference.

Michelle Hurst and Sarah McKenzie each had two hits while Christine Mahaffie pitched a complete game for Broadfording (2-3, 1-1 MDCC).

Laura Browning had two hits for Grace (0-5, 0-3).

GERMANTOWN, Md. - Colby Rickabaugh hit a two-run home run in the third inning for Hagerstown Community College (23-13).

Shepherd 12-22, WVU Tech 3-0


SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University outscored WVU-Tech 34-3 as the Rams notched a doubleheader sweep of the Golden Bears in WVIAC action.

Winning pitcher Mia Zappacosta had two hits and drove in four runs, while JoJo Small added two hits and three runs scored to lead the Rams (20-19) in the opener. Zappacosta pitched a two-hitter with a career-high eight strikeouts.

Shannon Leighty pitched a four-hit shutout to lead Shepherd in the second game. Erika Nagy and Brook Small each had two hits and three RBI and Megan Zahnow added two hits and three runs scored.




TRACK & FIELD



'Cats lead area preps at Penn Relays


PHILADELPHIA - Williamsport's Laura Scuffins, Michelle Mummert, Kristin Berry and Jess Clingan combined to turn in a season-best area time of 4:09.44 in the girls 1,600-meter at the Penn Relays.

Other area high school teams competing in the event were Middletown (4:10.22), Thomas Johnson (4:11.15), Chambersburg (4:30.99) and Mercersburg Academy (4:32.41).

Greencastle's Susan Graham-Gray, competing for the Cumberland Valley Athletic Club, placed fifth in the women's Olympic Development 10,000 in 36:41.28.

Hampton Inn 14, Norm Scott Drywall n/a: Jeremy Dodson and Byran Tracey each had two hits to lead Hampton Inn. Matt Renebo had two hits for Norm Scott Drywall.

SMRG 12, St. Lawrence 1: Jordan Thurber pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and also had three hits, including a home run, while Anthony Minnich, Aaron Dinterman, George Leissler and Alex Sweeney each had two hits for SMRG.

Sharpsburg Little League


Company One 9, Chase Construction 7: Rodney Flora hit a three-run home run and struck out 13 to lead Company One. Peter Martin had 12 strikeouts and added two hits for Chase. Kris Gober had two hits in the loss.

South Mountain Little League


Reese's Produce 10, Thompson's Gas 3: Phil Hershberger and Aaron Miranda each had two hits to lead Reese's. Brandon McLean and Tyler Itnyre had two hits each for Thompson's.

Conococheague Little League


Lions 10, Keller's Trucking 3: C.J. Hamilton had three hits, while Tyson Cline, Andrew Moats and Zack Shankeach added two. Tavis Palmer had two hits for Keller's.

West End Little League


Moose 8, VFW 7: Casey Shifler had two hits and Dustin Rowland homered to lead VFW. Josh Smith and Kyle Head combined for 10 strikeouts for Moose.

West End Minor League


Woodpoint 10, Hopewell 5: Colby Johnson had three hits and six RBI, while Wade Burkhart, Dalton Wilson, Drew Nemcek and Travis Durham each had two hits for Woodpoint. Dylan Stouffer and Paul Bigler each had two hits for Hopewell.

Red's Plumbing 5, Western Enterprise 4: Wade Burkhart and Josh Singleton each had three hits and Colby Johson and Travis Durham each had two hits for Red's Plumbing. Devon Mellott had three hits and Travis Roussey and Austin Nave each had two hits for Western Enterprise.

Western Enterprise 7, St. Lawrence Cement 3: Nave and Chad Bell each had three hits, while Chad Randall, Travis Roussey and Nick Houman each had two hits for Western Enterprise.

Federal Little League


Rotary 10, American Legion 2: Kris Burdick and Chris Nelling had three hits each, while Tyler Presgraves had two hits for Rotary. Alex Shearer had two hits for American Legion.

FOP 3, Goodwill 2: Tyrel McKoy and Gerald Tonsil combined to strike out 11 for FOP. Quendall Spencer had two hits and William Black threw a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts for Goodwill.
