Suns shut out on road

April 22, 2004

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Hagerstown managed just three hits against three Charleston pitchers and the RiverDogs sent the Suns to their eighth straight loss Wednesday, 3-0.

Charleston starter Jino Gonzalez (2-1) struck out eight in five-plus innings, while relievers Chad Orvella and Scott Vandermeer combined to retire the final 10 Suns hitters they faced. The three pitchers struck out 13 Suns in the game.

Hagerstown's Kelyn Acosta (0-1) took the loss, giving up eight hits and two runs (one earned) in seven innings.

Travis Schlichting led off the Charleston third with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Aneudi Cuevas' groundout.

Schlichting added a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Wes Bankston had an RBI single in the eighth.

The Suns (2-8) had their best opportunity in the sixth when Tim Hutting and Nate Schierholtz walked to chase Gonzalez. But Jon Armitage lined into a double play and Jesse Schmidt struck out to end the threat.
