Applications being taken for Head Start

Head Start of Washington County is accepting applications for the upcoming program year.

Families with children ages 3 to 5 are eligible to apply for the Head Start Program. Pregnant women and children up to age 3 are eligible to apply for the Early Head Start program.

Acceptance into the program is based on a child's age, family income and other family factors. Documentation is required when application is made.

Head Start centers in Hagerstown are at the Martin Luther King Center on North Avenue, the Westshire Center on West Washington Street, the Elgin Station Community Center on Elgin Boulevard, the Noland Village Community Center on Noland Drive and at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church just outside Boonsboro.

Applications can be obtained at the Head Start centers or by calling the enrollment assistant at 301-797-5231, ext. 110.

Governor's power is topic of meeting

As the sole state that allows the legislature to only reduce or restrict funding proposed by the governor, Maryland has one of the most powerful governors in the country.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the Washington County League of Women Voters will host a meeting at the community center of the Village at Robinwood to discuss the merits of that unique balance of power.

The event is free and open to the public.

For information, call Spring Ward at 301-733-8053.
