Sign language class


Deafnet Association Inc. will hold an evening Basic I sign language class from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Tuesday, April 13. The 12-week class is open to ages 12 and older.

Preschool open house


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - War Memorial Park's preschool will hold an open house from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15. Parents are invited, without their children, to visit the classroom, meet teachers and learn about the facility and program.

Special education workshop


FREDERICK, Md. - Families Plus! will offer the workshop "Understanding Special Education" from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Families Plus!, 35 E. Church St.

The workshop is designed to help parents find clarity and ways to become partners in their children's educational process. With the understanding of disabilities legislation and the local school system, parents can become informed advocates for their children.

Self-injury workshop


FREDERICK, Md. - Families Plus! will offer the workshop "Self-Injury: What Parents Need to Know" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at Thomas Johnson Middle School. The seminar is free.

Kim Long, school counselor at Governor Thomas Johnson Middle School, and Linda Stocks, Charles County school counselor, will discuss self-injury's relationship to eating disorders, why people injure themselves, and what to do when someone you love and care for is hurting himself.

Child Care Choices continued training credit is available to Maryland child-care providers.

Mother/child group


FREDERICK, Md. - The Moms With Kids group will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays, April 14 and 28, at Schaeffer Center.

Mother/child groups at Families Plus! include planned child-centered activities, mom-centered activities with child-

care, field trips, peer support, Mom's Night Out and access to Families Plus! resources. New members are welcome.

Special needs workshop


FREDERICK, Md. - "Transition to Middle School: Making the Move Smoother for Children With Special Needs" will be offered from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, at North Frederick Elementary School. The program is free and sponsored by Families Plus! and Frederick County Public Schools Counseling/School Support Services.

Deborah Buckman, special education coordinator for middle and high school, will share school system policies and procedures for transitioning children with special needs from elementary to middle school. Buckman will explain what aspects of this transition apply to all students as well as ways programs can adapt and change to meet the needs of individual students.
