Man charged with taking drugs into jail

April 03, 2004

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Hedgesville, W.Va., man was charged with taking drugs into Eastern Regional Jail after a correctional officer found a small bag of cocaine in one of his pockets, court records alleged.

Shawn Clayton Franklin, 31, was charged with one felony count of taking a controlled substance into a correctional facility.

West Virginia State Police Trooper Nathan Harmon, who investigated the case, said he arrested Franklin Thursday morning on a fugitive warrant. At that time, Harmon asked Franklin whether he had anything on him, to which Franklin replied he did not. Harmon patted down Franklin and did not find anything, records stated.

When Franklin was taken to the jail, an officer there found the small bag in the change pocket of Franklin's jeans, records alleged.

Franklin was being held in Eastern Regional Jail on $10,000 bail.

Conviction of the charge carries a sentence of either one to five years in prison or up to one year in jail.
