Mades case is delayed until May

April 02, 2004|by BRIAN SHAPPELL

The assault case against Washington County Sheriff Charles Mades that had been scheduled to be heard next week has been delayed until May, according to court records.

Records say Mades will face a second-degree assault charge in Washington County District Court on May 12 at 1 p.m. It had been scheduled for April 7 and, previously, April 1, records say.

Mades was charged with second-degree assault in February after Washington County District Court Commissioner Craig Clevenger found probable cause in the private criminal complaint filed by Sigrid Knode of Twin Springs Drive in Smithsburg.

Knode alleged in a complaint filed Feb. 2 that Mades touched her inappropriately several times in the kitchen of the Chewsville Community Center on May 1, 2003.

Mades has said the allegations made by Knode, a former Washington County Detention Center employee, are "absolutely false."

Attorneys who have consulted with or represented Mades on the matter have declined to comment on the case.
