Area roundup - Root blasts three home runs to lift Greencastle

PREP SOFTBALL



GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Kris Root led an offensive explosion with three home runs as Greencastle claimed a 17-5 victory over Milton Hershey on Tuesday.

Root hit a three-run homer to highlight a four-run first inning, added a solo homer in the second and another three-run shot in a five-run fourth for the Blue Devils (1-1). The game ended after 4 1/2 innings.

Jessica Ritchey hit two solo homers and Maxie George hit one for Greencastle. Megan Tracey added two hits.

Jefferson 9, Goretti 3


Heather Thompson struck out seven as Jefferson defeated St. Maria Goretti.

Erin Donoghue led the Gaels (1-3) with two hits, including a double, and an RBI, while losing pitcher Elena Prieston added a run-scoring triple.

Waynesboro 14, Cedar Cliff 4


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Paige Tanner had three hits, including a home run, and three RBI as Waynesboro rumbled past Cedar Cliff in five innings.

Jessie Miller added three hits and drove in two runs and Kristi Young added two hits and an RBI for the Maidens (2-0).

Fannett-Metal 10, Southern Fulton 9


FANNETTSBURG, Pa. - Jessie Whiteside had three hits, including a home run, in Southern Fulton's loss to Fannett-Metal.

Kaylie Mellot had three hits and Cajan Woodall had two for the Indians (0-2).

Jackie Gordon had three hits, including a solo home run, and Megan Schrack and Autumn Neutin each added three hits for Fannett-Metal.

Catoctin 9, Linganore 0


NEW MARKET, Md. - Will Delawter and Jake Yocum combined for a one-hitter and 15 strikeouts as Catoctin rolled past Linganore.

Delawter, Zach Ausherman and Kirk Simmel each had two hits, while J.J. Paglianete and R.J. Morse drove in two runs each for the Cougars (2-2).

Waynesboro 5, Central Dauphin 0


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Jared Helman tossed a complete-game four-hitter as Waynesboro blanked Central Dauphin.

Helman also had two hits and an RBI and Andrew Caron added a run-scoring single in the fifth inning for the Indians (2-0).

Fannett-Metal 6, Southern Fulton 4


FANNETTSBURG, Pa. - Fannett-Metal took advantage of two passed balls that led to three runs in the bottom of the seventh to knock off Southern Fulton.

The Indians (0-2) jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings, but Fannett-Metal scored five runs in the final two innings.

Bo Divelbliss hit a two-run single in the second inning and Danny True also drove in a run in the loss.

Grace Academy 11, CVCS 5


Nathaniel Hanft, Eric Hess and David Hardcastle each had two hits to lead Grace over Cumberland Valley Christian.

Matt Stine drove in three runs and Ryan Myers and Hess each had two RBI for Grace (1-2).

Broadfording 10, Woodline Baptist 3


John Calliope hit a three-run home run and John Kehr added a solo shot in the second inning to lead Broadfording over Woodline Baptist.

Calliope, Kehr, Mikkel Wallech, Josh Bishop and Eric Higgins each had two hits for the Lions. Higgins also drove in four runs. Tyler Duffey allowed two hits in five innings and struck out 12.

James Buchanan 10, Harrisburg 1


HARRISBURG, Pa. - Tyler Pittman hit a three-run homer to help James Buchanan beat Harrisburg in a five-inning game.

JB pitchers Marcus Riley and Shase Hollenshead combined on a two-hitter. Jeremy Poffenberger had two sacrifice flies for the Rockets (3-0).

East Pennsboro 9, Greencastle 7


ENOLA, Pa. - East Pennsboro pulled out a victory over Greencastle (1-2) in a game that was called after five innings because of darkness.

Hagerstown 4, Mont.-Germantown 2


Hagerstown Community College scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie as the Hawks edged Montgomery-Germantown.

Nathan Himes and Ryan Brady led Hagerstown (14-7) with two hits and an RBI each. Paul Conway, Devan Ewell and Ryan Harju also added two hits apiece.

Slippery Rock 13-7, Shepherd 7-3


SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Slippery Rock racked up 27 hits to notch a doubleheader sweep of Shepherd College.

The Rams (10-13) fell behind early in both games and couldn't mount a comeback either time.

Charlie Drummond, Josh Delawder, Joe Cook, Jason Walck and Adam Caron each had two hits in the opener. Drummond, Delawder and Walck each had two RBI.

Nathan Statzer and Ben Marzullo homered in the first game and Dave Ganos homered in the second game for Slippery Rock (19-9).

TAKOMA PARK, Md. - Mia Zappacosta and Shannon Leighty each earned wins as Shepherd College (9-12) swept Columbia Union.
