Youth of the Month honors bestowed on three students

Three Washington County students received Youth of the Month awards Tuesday at a County Commissioners meeting.

Aaron M. Mills, an eighth-grade student at Clear Spring Middle School, was named Youth of the Month for December 2003.

Amber Morris, a sixth-grade student at Boonsboro Middle School, received the award for January.

Derek A. Reichard, an eighth-grade student at Clear Spring Middle School, received the award for February.

Aaron, son of John and Sandra Mills, has been on the distinguished honor roll several times and is a member of the school band, according to a written statement.

He is an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, assisted with the homeless shelter and has participated in fund-raisers to help the disadvantaged, according to the statement.

Aaron participated in the United Way Run in 2001 and 2002 at Clear Spring Middle School and in the Junior Olympics.

He has played on the Clear Spring and Maugansville Little Leagues and the Hagerstown Pony League All-Star Team.

Amber, daughter of Matt and Kim Brant, has been on the honor roll and the distinguished honor roll and was nominated for the Citizenship Pillar in the Character Counts program, according to a written statement.

She is a homeroom representative as a member of the Boonsboro Middle School Student Council.

She is captain of a soccer team and has been involved in her local church youth group for several years, according to the statement.

Amber has donated clothes to the less fortunate and contributed to the canned food drive at school.

Derek, son of Craig and Julie Reichard, has been on the honor roll since first grade.

He's a member of the Clear Spring U-14 youth soccer traveling team and was a spelling bee finalist in sixth and seventh grades and a geography bee finalist in fifth-grade, according to a statement.

He has assisted with food, medicine and clothing drives for American Indians in Pine Ridge, S.D.

Derek has been a member of the Destination ImagiNation team and was a 2002 regional champion, a 2003 state champion and a global finalist, according to a statement.

He is a member of Explorer Post 2 Hagerstown-Potomac Dancers, which is dedicated to preserving the culture of the American Indian.

Derek participates in Middle School Youth Group activities at St. John's United Church of Christ and is a member of the eighth-grade chorus at school.
