Name change approved for golf course

March 24, 2004|by GREGORY T. SIMMONS

The Hagerstown City Council on Tuesday approved changing the name of the city's golf course to Hagerstown Greens at Hamilton Run.

The new name went into effect immediately but the sign for the course won't change for several weeks, City Director of Administrative Services John Budesky said after the council's voting session Tuesday.

The measure passed without opposition.

Budesky said earlier this month that the name Municipal Golf Course, as the course was known until Tuesday, gave the impression of a course that had a lower quality of play.

He said the city's nine-hole golf course is undergoing $118,000 in grant-funded upgrades to its irrigation system as well as other aesthetic upgrades, and the new name reflects those changes.

Budesky said he hopes the change will help attract more golfers to offset the city's annual costs for the course, which traditionally needs $50,000 to $60,000 from the city to balance its books every year.
