Pangborn Elementary to host Literature Festival

Pangborn Elementary School will host a Literature Festival Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the school.

Each grade level has planned special events for the students. Parents are invited to attend.

Boys and Girls Club to offer photography course

The Boys and Girls Club of Washington County is implementing a new program at its Cascade location.

The photography and technology program called "Through Their Eyes" provides club members with an introduction to photography and design.

Funding for the program comes from a nearly $3,500 grant provided by the Washington County Community Partnership for Children and Families. Other partners include Cascade Elementary School, FirstLook Photo, The Herald-Mail, Fuji Color Processing, Valley Mall and Staples.

The six-week program will provide introductions to photo design, cameras, photo journalism and digital photography.

Frederick County revises 2004-05 school calendar

The Frederick County Board of Education has approved revisions to the 2004-05 school calendar and adopted a calendar for the 2005-06 school year.


Changes in the 2004-05 calendar occur in October, requiring a full day of school on Oct. 13 to allow high schools to administer the PSAT to all 10th graders.

The change also makes Oct. 11 a full day for parent-teacher conferences with no school for students, and Oct. 12 a half-day for students to continue conferences.

Steak & Burger Dinner scheduled for April 15

The annual Boys and Girls Club Steak & Burger Dinner will be held Thursday, April 15 at Sheraton Four Points beginning at 6 p.m. with a silent auction.

Former Washington Redskin Joe Jacoby will be the featured speaker.

Dinner begins at 7 p.m.

Partnership packages are available. A table sponsorship, which includes eight tickets for dinner and sponsors two club members, is $400. A program sponsorship, which sponsors a page in the program, is $50. An individual ticket is $50 and a ticket sponsorship, which provides dinner for one club member, also is $50.

Educators inducted into Fellows program

Lawrence Myers, a social studies teacher at Smithsburg Middle School, and Amanda Furajter, a guidance counselor at Windsor Knolls Middle School in Frederick, Md., were among 12 educators inducted into the Service-Learning Fellows Program this month.

The new Fellows receive a $300 award and will be recognized at Maryland's Service-Learning Leadership Recognition Reception April 22 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Each of the educators has succeeded in providing students interesting, inspiring and academically challenging service-learning projects.
