No injuries in acid spill

March 14, 2004

A crate filled with an acid solution ruptured Saturday morning as Roadway Express crews were lifting it by forklift into a trailer, Funkstown Volunteer Fire Department Lt. Chris Showe said.

The spill caused firefighters from Funkstown and Halfway, the Washington County Special Operations Unit, the Washington County Air Unit and the Washington County Rehab Unit to respond to the scene to clean it up.

Showe said the incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. at Roadway Express on Oak Ridge Drive, near Hagerstown in Washington County.

Crews worked to clean up the spill until 3:30 p.m. No one was injured in the incident.

The acid solution leaked out of the trailer and onto the parking lot, Showe said.

He said the crate contained 119 gallons of the solution and that about 80 percent of the material leaked out.

Showe described the acid solution as a type of corrosive poison.
