Guy L. Smith


GERMANTOWN, Md. - Guy Leroy Smith, 85, of 20553 Shadyside Way, Germantown, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md.

Born Nov. 5, 1918, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Frank and Leila C. Beard Smith.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He owned and operated Smith Realty Company in Hagerstown for more than 30 years retiring in 1985.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Medairy Lodge 140 AF & AM; he was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of the Ali Ghan Shriners; the Hagerstown Shrine Club; and Tall Cedars of Lebanon 95. He was past president of the Washington County Board of Realtors.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Kerr Smith; one daughter, Joyce Pentz of Hagerstown; two sons, Clarence Smith of Bethesda, Md., and Dwight Smith of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Cathy Randall and Margaret Ann Brandt, both of Germantown; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one niece, Earlene Johnson of Hagerstown; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl J. Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. The Rev. Dr. James M. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Md. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Maryland National Guard.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Friday by the Medairy Lodge 140 AF & AM.




Sharon L. Scotten


QUINCY, Pa. - Sharon Lee Lonning Scotten, 61, of 209C Wesley Drive, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Nov. 27, 1942, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Thurston G. and Anna Mary Litzenberger Lonning.

She was a 1960 graduate of Bladensburg High School in Bladensburg, Md.

She was last employed as a payroll supervisor by Hahn's Shoe Co. in Landover, Md.

She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waynesboro, Pa.

She was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15 Auxiliary of Waynesboro.

She is survived by her husband, Robert A. Scotten, whom she married May 22, 1967; one son, Nicholas A. Scotten of Severna Park, Md.; three sisters, Chris Young and Anna Lonning, both of Kilmarnock, Va., and Lisa Bird of Vienna, Va.; three granddaughters; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Michael V. Scotten; and one brother, Robert Lonning.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waynesboro. The Rev. Thomas J. Hemler will be celebrant.

Burial will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Md.

There will be no public viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Margaret G. Linnert


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Margaret G. Linnert, 87, of 616 Philadelphia Ave., died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Penn Hall Nursing Center in Chambersburg.

She is survived by one daughter, Gail M. Fogleman of Chambersburg; one son, Gary Linnert of San Jose, Calif.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.

There will be no public viewing.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.




Dorothy H. Rector


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Dorothy Hitchon Rector, 77, of 1000 Leidig Drive, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Jan. 13, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Cobden B. and Mabel Peterman Hitchon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert D. Rector, on Sept. 21, 2003.

She graduated in 1947 from Germantown Hospital in Philadelphia, as a registered nurse.

She was a civilian nurse at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital.

She is survived by one sister, Nancy H. Weber of Oreland, Pa.; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons, David R. Rector and Robert D. Rector Jr.; one sister; and five brothers.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home in Chambersburg. Dr. W. David Kent will officiate.

Private graveside services will be in Lincoln Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joe H. Sowell


FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Joe H. Sowell, 73, of Fredericksburg and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.

Born Jan. 1, 1931, in Russell, Kan., he was the son of the late Navarre and Edna Green Sowell.

He retired from the Civil Service with the Internal Revenue Service in Martinsburg.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Marines.
