Factors driving the popularity of RVs

March 08, 2004

An increasing number of people choose the RV lifestyle for the following reasons:

  • Flexibility and convenience: RVers don't have to deal with the stress of rigid airline schedules, advance reservations, airport lines and luggage restrictions.

  • Comfort: Many of today's RVs feature fully-equipped kitchens and baths, rooms that slide out at the touch of a button, central air and heat, TVs, surround-sound stereos and more.

  • Family appeal: RVing is a great way to travel with kids, and many RVers say such travel fosters an increased sense of togetherness and helps improve family communication.

  • Affordability: RV vacations are more affordable than travel by personal car, commercial airline or cruise ship, according to vacation cost-comparison studies by independent consulting firm PKF Consulting. Even factoring in RV ownership costs, and considering resulting tax benefits, a family of four can spend up to 70 percent less when traveling by RV.

  • Lure of the outdoors: RVers can enjoy the mountains, beaches, parks and other popular attractions without giving up the comforts of home. Some travel trailers and motor homes even make it easy to haul all-terrain vehicles and other outdoor toys.

  • Versatility: In addition to travel, camping and outdoor recreation, RVs are being used year-round for such purposes as shopping, tailgate parties at sporting events and other hobbies.
