A Williamsport man was killed early Sunday in a one-vehicle accident in front of Fountain Rock Elementary School.

Wilbur I. Sprecher Jr., 35, of 16615 Kendle Road, was killed about 2:30 a.m. Sunday on Md. 68, a Maryland State Police news release stated. Police said Sprecher was traveling west when his 1990 Chevrolet Blazer crossed the center line, left the road and struck a large tree in front of the elementary school.

Police said no one witnessed the crash, but several motorists stopped to assist Sprecher soon afterward.

Sprecher was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Tom Wetzel, a forensic investigator for Washington County, said Sprecher was pronounced dead at the scene by Washington County Medical Examiner Dr. Edward Ditto. Wetzel said a cause of death was not determined Sunday.

Wetzel said an autopsy would be performed in Baltimore today to determine the cause of death.

Ditto and state police investigators assigned to the case could not be reached for comment late Sunday.

Sprecher and Bethany Mary Roberts, 33, also of Williamsport, obtained a marriage license about three weeks ago, according to county records.

Other residents from the 16600 block of Kendle Road described Sprecher as cordial, but said he kept to himself most of the time. None of them said they knew him well.

Neighbors also said many people stopped by the home Sunday afternoon.
