Smithsburg cops get deputy duties

March 03, 2004|by BRIAN SHAPPELL

SMITHSBURG - The three officers from the Smithsburg Police Department were sworn in as special deputies to the Washington County Sheriff's Department Tuesday evening.

Chief Michael Potter and officers Michael Neuland and James "J.R." Bowers now will have the power to make arrests or issue charges in some instances when the sheriff's department requests help, the chief said.

The arrangement is similar to one the sheriff's department made with the Town of Hancock in September, Washington County Sheriff Charles Mades said.

Mades said officers from the outlying municipalities of the county often get to police scenes near their borders before deputies stationed closer to the middle of the county.

"We depend on them, and I think they depend on us," Mades said. "It's a win-win situation."
