Fire destroys small log cabin

February 29, 2004

MAUGANSVILLE - A fire on Saturday destroyed a small home at 13723 Hopps Landing Road, off Broadfording Road, next to the Conococheague Creek, a fire official said.

When firefighters arrived at the home shortly after 6:30 p.m., there was smoke coming out, Lt. Chuck Burleson of the Maugansville Goodwill Volunteer Fire Co. said.

Within minutes, though, the house was fully on fire, he said.

Burleson said a man told firefighters he was asleep when the fire started, but his dog woke him up.

Burleson said the house was considered a total loss, with about $2,500 worth of damage.

He said this may seem like a small amount, but it was a very small log cabin.

Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation records describe the building as a 420-square-foot clubhouse.

Firefighters stayed at the scene for about three hours, Burleson said.
