CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - An exhibit at the Chambersburg Area Council for the Arts' new gallery features more than 50 oil paintings and woodturnings by Franklin County artists.

Oil paintings by Chambersburg artists Cindy Haden and Jean Strike, Waynesboro artists Eliane Ambrose and Virginia Hair and Greencastle painter Joanne Hafer, and woodturnings created by Jim Mills of Chambersburg will be on display through Saturday, March 27, at the spacious new gallery in the renovated Capitol Theatre Center, 159 S. Main St. in Chambersburg.

The show boasts only two media - oil paint and wood - but a variety of styles and subjects, gallery director Anne H. Finucane said. Viewers will enjoy both abstract and realist works, florals, wildlife, pastoral landscapes and one portrait, she said.

Finucane said the response to the show has been excellent since the exhibit opened in mid-January. The new gallery space has likely played a role in the show's popularity, she said.

The Council for the Arts moved from 75 S. Main St. in Chambersburg to a storefront space on the first floor of the theater complex last summer. The roomy locale is perfect for artistic receptions, has more room for sculptures, and features high ceilings and natural light, Finucane said.

She plans five annual shows at the gallery, including four highlighting local artists' work and a miniatures show that draws art from across the nation. Watercolors and three-dimensional crafts will grace the gallery during its next show, Finucane said.
