Area roundup - Indians advance in District 5 playoffs

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Samantha Cain had 21 points, nine rebounds and four steals for Southern Fulton as the No. 9 Indians defeated Turkeyfoot 47-42 in the first round of the PIAA District 5-A playoffs Wednesday.

Candace Bard recorded 10 points and four boards for Southern Fulton (18-7).

Bishop Walsh 53, St. James 28

ST. JAMES - Shanel Arnold had 16 points and Lara Groetzinger added 12 to lead Bishop Walsh past St. James.

Katherine Kopp led the Saints (2-12) with 11 points.




BOYS BASKETBALL



No. 2 T. Johnson 59, Westminster 56


WESTMINSTER, Md. - Drew Gaeng had 21 points, six assists and three steals and Thomas Johnson withstood a late rally in an MVAL Chespeake victory over Westminster (14-5, 4-5).

Colby Jackson scored 10 points and Matt Fast had five rebounds for the Patriots (17-2, 9-0).

No. 3 Hedgesville 40, Frederick 25


HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Matt Deaner had 17 points to lead Hedgesville to an interstate victory over Frederick.

Dustin Gregory added 12 points for the Eagles (15-3).

D.J. Blumenthal led Frederick (8-11) with eight points.

No. 9 Middletown 57, FSK 43


UNION BRIDGE, Md. - John Keimig had a game-high 23 points as Middletown stifled Francis Scott Key in MVAL Piedmont action.

The Knights (13-6, 5-2) were efficient from the free-throw line, hitting 16 of 20 shots. Keimig led the way, going 10-for-11. Patrick Carney added 15 points in the win.

Flint Hill 62, St. James 40


OAKTON, Va. - Mike Christenson had 19 points to lead Flint Hill (Va.) to a Mid Atlantic Conference victory over St. James.

Matt Greissing led the Saints (7-11, 1-8) with 11 points and six rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Jordan Ottley also grabed six rebounds and Miles Chan had eight points and four steals in the loss.




FRESHMAN BOYS HOOPS



Goretti 61, Musselman 40: David Plank scored 21 points, Logan Bolinger had 19 and Chad Bikle added 13 for St. Maria Goretti as the Gaels (16-0) finish their season undefeated. Brad Miller scored 10 points for Musselman.

Site changed for District 5 boys hoops


The PIAA District 5 Class A boys basketball semifinal matchup between Southern Fulton and Turkeyfoot, initially reported to be played tonight at Bedford High School, has changed. The game will be played tonight at Everett High School at 7 p.m.

Rams announce 2004 football schedule


SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd College will open the 2004 football season at Virginia State, head coach Monte Cater recently announced.

The Rams will play their first home game Sept. 11 against Slippery Rock. Shepherd also will host games against Fairmont State (Sept. 25), Glenville State (Oct. 9), West Virginia Wesleyan (Oct. 23) and Concord (Oct. 30).

Bonano sets school indoor record


LEWISBURG, Pa. - Dickinson College senior track athlete Emilie Bonano, a South Hagerstown grad, recently set a school record for the 60-meter dash indoors, placing fourth among NCAA Division III sprinters in 8.20 seconds at the Bucknell Winter Classic.

Bonano also anchored the 1,600 relay to the top D-III time of the meet (4:15.25).
