Adoption of new rural zoning, more internet-based county services and a strategy for using the planned runway extension at the Hagerstown Regional Airport are among the goals the Washington County government will pursue in 2004.

Commissioners' President Gregory I. Snook reviewed the county's goals during his State of the County address to the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce Tuesday.

They include:

  • Development of a highway pavement maintenance plan

  • Adoption of a Rural Area zoning designation

The commissioners will first consider recommendations of a task force studying rural zoning for the county's Comprehensive Plan. Their report is due in May, Snook said.

  • n Expansion of services available online through the county's Web site

  • Development of an employee recognition program linked to employee suggestions

  • Development of a plan to use the runway extension to increase the county's tax base and better utilize its Foreign Trade Zone

The U.S. Department of Commerce approved seven tracts in Washington County for a Foreign Trade Zone in 2002, including 443 acres in the airport complex.

  • Development of a countywide revitalization plan for urban areas
