Rebels stay unbeaten in Antietam

An explosive third period by David Miner propelled No. 1 South Hagerstown over Smithsburg 83-37 in MVAL Antietam action Tuesday.

Miner scored 22 of his game-high 45 points as South (17-2, 11-0) outscored the Leopards 32-2 in the third quarter, extending an already insurmountable halftime lead.

Miner has 1,590 career points, moving him within 174 points of the Washington County public school scoring record held by Colby Bachtell (1,764).

Jesse Gutekunst had 10 points, 18 rebounds and six blocked shots, while Gene Johnson and Jordan Beard each added eight point for the Rebels.


Blake Nalley led Smithsburg (3-16, 1-10) with nine points.

No. 2 Thomas Johnson 55 Aberdeen 47

FREDERICK, Md. - Thomas Johnson was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in overtime and the Patriots defeated Aberdeen.

Chad Warren hit two foul shots with 20 seconds remaining to tie the game at 41-41 and TJ held off Aberdeen to force overtime.

Jair Brady scored 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help the Patriots (16-2) secure the win.

South Carroll 71 No. 4 Walkersville 67

SYKESVILLE, Md. - Ryan Burns scored 20 points to lead South Carroll (4-14, 3-5) to the MVAL Piedmont upset of Walkersville (16-4, 7-1).

Luther Weedon had 19 points and five steals for the Lions, while Brandon Geppert scored 15 points, Brock McCollum had 14 and Chris Hannigan had 12 points and 15 rebounds.

No. 7 Goretti 65, FSK 61

UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Mike Nelson had 23 points - the first St. Maria Goretti player to reach the 20-point plateau this season - and the Gaels defeated Francis Scott Key.

Joey Spierenburg had 15 points and seven rebounds and Nelson grabbed eight rebounds for Goretti (14-13). Andy Chambers dished out five assists.

No. 9 Middletown 76 Century 54

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - John Keimig had 24 points, five assists and two steals for Middletown in its MVAL Piedmont win over Century. Joe Keimg had 11 points with five assists and six rebounds while Kyle Lear added 16 points, six rebounds and two steals for Middletown (12-6, 4-2).

Brunswick 85, Boonsboro 43

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Brunswick outscored Boonsboro 29-6 in the second quarter and the Railroaders routed Boonsboro in the MVAL Antietam.

Jason Anderson had 18 points and 14 rebounds and Bill Bernard had 18 points and seven assists for Brunswick (8-10, 4-7), which had 19 steals. Marcus Johnson had 10 points and Chad Baker had nine points and nine rebounds in the win.

Kellen Seligman had a team-high 14 points for Boonsboro (4-16, 2-10). Brad Wetzel added 12 points, but was forced to leave the game just before halftime with an injured wrist. His current condition was not disclosed.

Williamsport 77, Catoctin 46

WILLIAMSPORT - Josh Bowers had 17 points and six steals to lead Williamsport over Catoctin in MVAL Antietam action.

Dave Warrenfeltz added 16 points for the Wildcats (11-9, 6-6) while Corey Broadwater had 13 points and seven rebounds. Billy Malone scored 10 points for Catoctin (6-11, 4-5).

Hancock 54, N. Garrett 47

ACCIDENT, Md. - Jeff Willison had 20 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead Hancock over Northern Garrett.

Josh Hendershot scored 14 points and Brad Spielman had 11 points with seven assists and five rebounds for Hancock (8-12).

Montrose 67, Mercersburg 46

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Uche Echefy had 24 points as Montrose Christian strolled past Mercersburg Academy.

Antwan Hardy had 17 points and Tom Hammonds added 15 for Montrose, which outscored Mercersburg in each quarter. Sean Christiansen and Carlos Campos each had 17 points and Eric Rahauser added eight for the Blue Storm (5-11).

Grace 68, CVCS 36

Jack Sharkey had 28 points and 13 rebounds to lead Grace Academy past Cumberland Valley Christian in the Mason Dixon Christian Conference.

Darren Sweeney had 10 points and A.J. Serafini had nine points and 13 rebounds for Grace (10-10, 9-5).

Jordan McBeth had 14 points for CVCS (8-12, 6-7).

Heritage 58, St. James 56

Drew Kidd scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half as Heritage Academy edged St. James.

Zach Hartman had 15 points and Kidd dished out five assists for the Eagles (14-8).

Matt Greissing had 18 points, Miles Chan had 14, Jordan Ottley had 12 and Shannon Strange added 10 for St. James (7-10).

McConnellsburg 50 Forbes Road 37

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Scott Earley had 16 points to lead McConnellsburg over Forbes Road in the opening round of the PIAA District 5 Class A tournament.

Dave Thomas had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Matt Spriggs added 10 points, five assists, five steals and eight rebounds for the Spartans (18-7).

McConnellsburg advances to play Shanksville, a 50-36 winner over Rockwood, Thursday at 7 p.m.

Musselman 80 Berkeley Springs 67

INWOOD, W.Va. - Sean Corbett scored 24 points for Musselman in its Potomac Valley Conference win over Berkeley Springs. Ryan Owings added 15 points for Musselman (6-10, 4-1) while Stefan Reid and Alan Kees each scored 14 points.

Tony Belt scored 32 points and Matt Rockwell added 17 points for Berkeley Springs (7-11, 1-5).
