Chambersburg students to lose some holidays

February 14, 2004|by DON AINES

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Students will be attending school a day longer in June and missing some holidays because of weather-related closures, according to Chambersburg Area School Superintendent Edwin Sponseller.

Sponseller said at Wednesday's school board meeting that the district has lost seven days to bad weather, including one for Hurricane Isabel, which did not produce the severe weather in this area predicted by forecasters.

To ensure the district is able to get in 180 days of instruction, Sponseller said students will attend school on Monday, Presidents' Day. Other make-up days include Thursday, April 8, and Monday, April 12, reducing Easter vacation by two days.

The school calendar has been lengthened a day to end on Thursday, June 10, Sponseller said. Further closures will require adding more make-up days beginning with Friday, June 11, he said.
